"Text Message From GirlShoes..."

Last night, at about 10.30PM, this text came in from my daughter...

"Hey, DadE.  Bert and I got our first Christmas tree. Listening to John Denver! 'Please Daddy, Don't Get Drunk This Christmas!!"

I love you and miss you."

I think the name of the album was 'Rocky Mountain Christmas'...

There weren't any alcoholics at our house when the kids were little... we just liked the song and the album... one side was popular Christmas songs, the other side was religious Christmas songs... a little something for everyone... I like both sides of Christmas... neither offends me.

Another John Denver 'favorite' Christmas song...

Yet another...

I can see that a great deal of what we did when the kids were little has passed forward into 'Their Christmases'...

Carol over at Carol The Gardener has a great Christmas post...   I really love her 'Grandchildren's Tree'...

I would love to hear your favorite Christmas songs... and see your photos... Whether it's a 'Religious' Christmas or not...  I think it's still such a wonderful time of the year...

My Mom would be going full steam if she was here... I can't think of anyone who loved Christmas any more than she did...

Merry Christmas...

Really...

  1. "Breath of Heaven: Mary's Song" is my all-time favorite Christmas Song... but Adam Sandler's is a close tie. Does that make me nuts? proll'y... but I like that about me.

That's so cool about GirlShoes! Their first Christmas tree!!! She needs a special set of ornaments to mark this occasion... and a John Denver album. ;-D I love his song, "The Gift You Are"... so much so I thought of it when naming my man-child.

;-D Merry Christmas to YOU! REALLY!!!

  2. This is one of my favorite Christmas CD's. Had it on vinyl, 8-track, cassette, too! Barenaked for the Holidays and Twisted Christmas are in heavy rotation right now. "O Holy Night" is my fav song.

  4. I don't have a favorite Christmas song per se. I do remember driving in my car with my neices one year and I kept signing Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer to them all day. lol

  5. The Charlie Brown Christmas score is our favorite jazzy, wake-up-and-sniff-the-eggnog, album. Sometimes it provokes and outbreak of Snoopy Dancin'.

  6. I have never really cared for Christmas but with someone new in my life this year I'm so much more looking forward to it.

I love Christmas Wrapping by the Waittresses and Same Old Lang Syne by Dan Fogelburg. I guess I go for the relationship songs.

I hope you have an awesome xmas, Shoesies!

  8. That is an awesome text message. My mom constantly had Christmas records playing from Thanksgiving until Christmas. She set up a card table in the living room for wrapping gifts and stacked up records in the record player. I don't even remember the specifics, but there was always Christmas music in our house from after dinner until bedtime. I love Christmas music and know most of the words to traditional Christmas songs. I think my personal favorite is Do You Hear What I Hear. But that could be challenged on any given day... I loved just sitting in the living room listening to the music and looking at our Christmas tree. It was very peaceful. I appreciated the tradition of decorating the tree and eventually the shopping day that my dad and I had together. But I loved just sitting and listening to the music and looking at the lit up tree. My mom steadily wrapping gifts. When you are little, you like the excitement. As a teenager, I liked the peacefulness. Go figure.

  10. There are a few songs that do not get on my nerves. Otherwise I don't really like Christmas music - seems they are sad, for whatever reason.

    Merry Christmas XO :)

  11. Glad you liked the tree. I've been collecting those ornaments for 30 plus years. I took some close ups of some of them and it reminds me of an I SPY book! My favorite Christmas song ... hands down....O Holy Night.

    Merry Christmas!

  16. Hey Shoes, Our mom's must have been related! She decked the halls like nobodies business! I got some of her decorations after she passed. I especially love her ceramics!

The kids and I have really put a lot more effort into the tree this year. It is almost as if this is the first holiday I feel alive after she left. It has been almost 3 years. Unbelievable. I know you've been over to the blog. I put a few pics up. I even have a special tab for the holiday we are especially enjoying this year.

Does it ever get easier? I'm just guessing not!! Well, on the "up side"?? I found out I'm gonna be a grandma next Christmas! Effing Joy, Eh??

@ Robin... I still love sitting in my room and just looking at the tree... quite a few years' worth of memories tend to trip through my head when I do this... Merry Christmas, you...

@ Flying Solo... Yeah, it is great when they continue the tradition onward... I hope that when I'm gone, the one thing that my kids will take from this is how much I loved the holiday season... Peace, Love, Serenity for all the World... For Everyone...

@ France... I have some I need to post for you that won't be quite so sad... of course, they aren't traditional songs either!!! Hahahaha... ;o) Thank you SO much for the Christmas card!!!

@ Carol... I LOVE Christmas ornaments... I bought some vintage ones in Monroe, LA this weekend... it's funny.. 'Vintage' = 'old, used'... but I know that they have tons of memories to them... and they are back on a tree where they belong... Merry Christmas you!!

@ Christine... Yeah, I like 'We Three Kings...' too!!! As for my comment on your blog, you deserve it!!! Keep on going!!!

@ Danielle... It's ok... Liking music is good enough!!! Merry Christmas to you and your little one... :o)

@ Carol II... I found some Shiny Brites in Monroe, LA this weekend... and a special someone loaned me a box of them as well... My tree is looking good and vintagy... if that's a word!!!

@ Darn Girl... and a very Merry Christmas to you too, sweet one!!!

@ Pat... nothing wrong with a John Denver Christmas medley... :o)

@ K... Yes, sweetie, it does get easier... Three years isn't enough time. Be sure to try to involve some of your Mom's customs into your holiday... that will help, I think... it's helped me. I will come over and look at the pics again.

You? A grandmother?? Get back, Loretta!!! Congratulations!!! Merry Christmas you!!!

@ Heff... For some reason, I DO believe that you would groove to Johnny Mathis... that guy could sing!!!

Merry Christmas to all... and Happy Holiday Greetings to my friends who have celebrated Hanukkah... It is a time to remember our families... present and past...
