"A Rolling Stone...

Gathers No Moss...

I have really been on a Rolling Stones kick here lately... makes me wanna get my Marantz receiver repaired, get a new turntable, and fire those mothers up.

Some sources cite Brian Jones as the original founder of the band, and as their fame grew, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards became the more prominent figures of the band.  Eventually, according to these sources, Jones was forced out of the band, and just a short time later was found dead.

'Have Mercy'

She said "Man, your baby gonna leave you
Her bags are packed up under the bed,"

'Have Mercy' was always one of my favorite early Stones songs.

'The Last Time'

The Stones have always used additional musicians in the studio and on the road. One of my favorite non-Stone Stones has been Chuck Leavell.  I first learned of him way back in some configuration of The Allman Brothers Band, after the deaths of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley.

Chuck Leavell

'Gimme Shelter'

Man O Man O Man O Man...

If there is a better opening riff for a song ever, I can't think of it... I love playing that with my Gibson 347 through my Peavey Delta Blues amp set at LOUD!!!!

Gibson ES-347

Damn, I love music...

... still in a bit of a funk, but this sure helps.

  1. Do whatever it takes to get u out of that funk!!!

I don't know what a Marantz receiver is but get it repaired and buy ur turntable and just be happy.

Life is short. Very short. I have a detective dying from cancer. He still comes to work every day. I don't know how much time he has left. He's on his last type of chemo. But dang if he is not trying to stay alive for his children and grandchild. I have a lot of admiration for him.

Whatever it take Professor. Whatever it takes.

Simple things are what make my life joyful.

Take care. Happy to see u writing about ur music again.

    1. A Marantz receiver was just a great brand of stereo receivers back in the day. I replaced it with a Pioneer brand... one of the worst music equipment choices I've ever made...

  3. Hey you... I love Chuck Leavell's music as well. Just a few years ago, he was named 'Georgia Tree Farmer of the Year.' He is big into planting renewable resources...

What do I need to de-funk?

    Get laid??

  4. Well, there's the opening riff to Brown Sugar. Give that a blast through your Gibson/Peavey and see if it doesn't bring a big grin to your face. :-)

Nice post - I'm gonna play some Stones today too.

    1. Hey Monkey...

Hmmmm... now where could I go to hear LOTS of music!!! There are a host of places, really. Austin, TX always has a hopping music scene, as does New Orleans.

I have some great vinyl... I either need to get my old receiver fixed, or find another one.

I hope your weekend has been a good one!!

  7. Funny thing about music... from the time I was a teenager (even a tween)... whenever I was depressed turning on the music always helped. I cannot tell you how many times I shut my door, cranked up my record player, danced around my room, and sang into my hairbrush. It was always easier than a curling iron because it had no cord. Although the curling iron looked better, IMO, but I am such a klutz I was likely to trip on the cord. Hairbrush was always a safer bet. Those sessions were pretty surefire at bringing me out of whatever funk I was in. Music is soulfood. I do believe that. Keep on jamming. I think it will help:)

    1. Well... there's that old adage, 'music soothes the savage beast,' or something like that. Of course, that is said to be a mis-quote... the real statement being 'Music hath the charms to soothe the savage breast...'

In a Bugs Bunny cartoon, Bugs actually makes the statement about 'music calming the savage beast...'

But there is something about music that makes things better.

  9. Man, how old were they in those photos? They look like young teenagers. Love the song!

Jumping Jack Flash and Can't Get No Satisfaction is my favorites.
I think I still have one of their albums

Yes , pioneer systems was not that great as they said it was, but yet it was what everyone was buying

    1. Hey there, Liz... Hell, they were kids. John Lennon would have been 72 this past week. When the BeaTles first appeared on 'The Ed Sullivan Show,' George Harrison was on 17.

Man, where have the years gone!?!?!

  10. Music always helps :) I'm sorry about your funk shoes. I love Lynyrd Skynyrd's "All Funked Up". It's a good tune for getting you out of such a thing, at least for a minute or two! Would love to see you rockin out on your guitar. Video????

  11. I've always believed music heals the soul.

I love Keith Richards! I read his autobiography that came out a year or so ago and I don't think there's any celebrity alive or dead that has lived his crazy and wild ways.

    1. Good morning, Princess... I love Keith Richards as well... I have that book at home, and much to my chagrin, I haven't made/found time to start reading it yet. I need to. I know a great deal about him already, but I am sure that there is so much more that would be interesting to know!!

  12. I am a "Quote Person" I love words. Can u tell?

So I had to research this one u quoted up above in ur comment.

Musick has Charms to sooth a savage Breast,
To Soften Rocks, or bend a knotted Oak.

(whoo I'm loving that "bend a knotted Oak")

I've read, that things inanimate have mov'd
And, as with living Souls, have been inform'd,
By Magick Numbers and persuasive Sound.
What then am I? Am I more senseless grown
Than Trees, or Flint? O force of constant Woe!
"Tis not in Harmony to clam my Griefs.
Anselmo sleeps, and is at Peace: last Night
    The silent Tomb receiv'd the good Old King;
He and his Sorrows now are safely lodg'd
Within it's cold, but hospitable Bosom.
Why am not I at Peace?

The funny thing right below this quote is another phrase referred too. I am wondering why they are connecting the two of these phrases. Other than the origin is the same William Congreve, in the Mourning Bride, 1697.

"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned."

As you'll answer it, take heed
This Slave commit no Violence upon
Himself. I've been deceiv'd. The Publick Safety
Requires he should be more confin'd; and none,
No not the Princes self, permitted to
Confer with him. I'll quit you to the Kind.
Vile and ingrate! too late thou shalt repent
The base injustice thou hast done my Love:
Yes, thou shalt know, spite of they past Distress,
    And all those Ills which thou so long hast mourn'd;
Heav'n has no Rage, like love to Hatred turn'd,
Nor Hell a Fury, like a Woman scorn'd.

    Mmm well something to ponder.

Words so very important at times. Whether they be said, written or sung.

Looks like u r on the mend. Joyful to see some sunlight shining down on u.

    Take care.
