"The Challenger..."

Twenty-Five years ago this morning, a historic shuttle mission was to begin.  The mission was going to include the first teacher to go into space...

I had always been interested in Space Travel... To allow oneself to be sealed into a capsule/shuttle and hurled into the sky at such break neck speed sounds scary... but I would love to do it.

Success breeds boredom... the launch of this mission wasn't televised by any of the major networks...

STS-51-L

We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for the journey and waved goodbye and "slipped the surly bonds of earth" to "touch the face of God." - Ronald Reagan

  1. I was five when it happened and although I do not remember the actual event, I do remember it playing over and over on the news and the horrified looks on my parents faces.

  2. they had it set up for us to watch in our kindergarten class. i remember it so clearly: someone said, "was that supposed to happen?" then they took us out for extra recess while they figured out how to explain what we saw. they decided just to see if the president would make a speech or something. we watched that, too. even as a little kid i didn't like reagan - my mom told me i described him as "fake-y" - but that speech made me cry. still kinda tears me up.

  3. I was standing on New Smyrna beach with my Jr. High class from Orlando...
we were there to watch the space ship launch. I will NEVER forget the emotions that I felt, the sounds that I heard or all that I saw that day. Ever. We were pulling pieces out of the water right in front of us...

  5. You would not be able to pay me enough money to ever do something like that. I've never been interested in the whole space thing and even though the event itself was very tragic it didn't hold much meaning for me as it did others. It's hard to believe it was that long ago though. Ugh.

  8. I agree. It's incredible how quickly the media lose interest. Wouldn't mind getting on board that space shuttle either. I remember I was getting a tan on some beach, lying on my back, when I saw the space shuttle on top of that huge airplane flying over, making almost no sound. It was in 1983 if memory serves. Strange moment I'll never forget. It was huge.
