Once upon a time when I was married, as the relationship was disintegrating, I became more responsible for cooking so my kids could eat dinner at a reasonable time. Maybe I should have been cooking long before... I really don't identify tasks and responsibilities according to gender...
Anyway... I love to cook... I wish I cooked more than I do... it's just sometimes, cooking for one can be a bummer... I err on the side of sometimes making too much, and having to throw some away because it spoils before I can use it.
I love to use cast iron ware... I have one of these...
I like to use it for Jambalaya... it's SO good for that!! I use Zatarain's mix...
Along with the boxed mix, I like to add smoked sausage and chicken... along with green peppers, onions, tomatoes, celery... I think it is SO good... and pretty much just follow the instructions...
In addition, the magazine includes tips on marinades and grilling sauces, information about pans, and this particular edition rates measuring cups... I've always used Anchor Hocking measuring cups, and according to this issue, the measurements of the Anchor Hocking can be off a good 14%!
However, I doubt I will find THIS recipe in 'Cook's Illustrated!'
Anyhoo, Jessica... thank you VERY much for this great subscription! I so look forward to the future issues!! BTW, I DID get a rice maker!! Thank you!!!

A man that loves to cook is worth a 1,000 that'll kill a spider.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your win!
My late husband was a chef. French chef. I ate pretty damned good too. I hate to cook so he cooked and I did the dishes. Now with my Bruce, I can cook the easy stuff. Stuff my hubby would say, "That's not food". haha. I learned a lot working with him and living with him. I'm fascinated to watch someone cook, I just hate to do the prep.

ReplyDeleteI hope you don't find that recipe in the magazine... LMAO!!!
Congrats on winning! I CAN'T cook - at all. Even with directions. Fires happen - it's outrageous! So - here's my theory:
just send me your leftovers. With some waffles on the side. Oh - and some grilled cheese. BETTER yet - I have a kitchen at your disposal. I even have a hot pad. And some pots and pans and stuff. C'mere.

Oooooo. I love Cooks Illustrated...and Cooking Light...and anything with recipies, especially if there are pictures. I find cooking relaxing and creative. I put on a little Joe Bonamassa and add my flavor :) A little vino, a few candles. Ah yes. Cooking!
ReplyDeletep.s. i just caught myself humming that song...
ReplyDeletewhat have you done to me?
@ Nitebird... Thanks! I like cooking! I wish I was better!! Viking Range offers some cooking workshops... I should have signed up for some of them!!
ReplyDelete@ Bouncin'... yeah... the prep AND the clean up... We can always learn from others if we just allow ourselves to be open to that...
@ Gobbles... the stories of your kitchen fires are legend on the 'net. As for why you walk around 'humming' a song about sucking chocolate salty balls, that sounds like a personal problem to me.
Check out THIS video of Isaac Hayes performing this in concert.

Hard to believe this was the same fellow who wrote and recorded "Shaft." Rest In Peace, Chef...
@ Wine And Words... Yeah, I am drawn to cooking magazines as well. I remember reading something a few years ago about a famous photographer who quit his job shooting nudes for Playboy to go do photography for Food Magazines... he said he thought it was more of a challenge. Of course, I guess as long as one doesn't lust for mashed potatoes... ;o)

My husband sings bits of that song at inopportune times. And another one about 'Bob's Meats'. Something like, "We wanna put our meat in your mouth."
ReplyDeleteHe's pretty fond of Gumbo and Jambalaya. But he cooks his own. He's half Cajun, and it's not the thinking half.
Ha.
Can't figure out how to comment as all the blogs seem to have a profile requirement. I had to start a new blog (same name) and don't know how to comment other than anonymous, which I hate. Any thoughts woud be helpful.
ReplyDeleteBTW, this is middlechild.
ReplyDeleteCongrats! Ah, a man willing to cook. What a wonder. The only thing that gave me true joy when I left my marriage, was leaving a very helpless man behind to try and feed himself with the rigid guidelines he gave me to cook with. Hee hee
ReplyDeleteCooks is a wonderful publication...you always can learn something from it! Also it has gorgeous photography...Enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteYAAAAY! I'm happy the subscription when to someone who will appreciate it and put it to use. It's one of my favorite magazines and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
