'Jimi Hendrix...'

It is hard to believe that Jimi Hendrix has been gone 40 years... he died September 18, 1970...

He came out of nowhere, it seems... with such fluid chording structures and rhythm playing...  He took guitar playing to the next level, and although there are players today who could probably play circles around Jimi... he is who I want to listen to... Those opening licks to 'Voodoo Chile'... wow...

Did you know that Jimi Hendrix was in the 101st Airborne Division and stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky?

Did you know that Jimi Hendrix played guitar for the Isley Brothers??

... as well as Curtis Knight and the Squires???

In 1966, Chas Chandler was ending his stint as the bassist for Eric Burdon and the Animals... and felt he could make promote Jimmy... Chas was the one who changed the spelling to Jimi... and gathered the personnel to form 'The Jimi Hendrix Experience'...

Jimi Hendrix recorded three albums with the Experience, and then moved on to 'Band Of Gypsies' with Billy Cox and Buddy Miles...

... and early on September 18, 1970, at the age of 27... Jimi Hendrix died...

It's hard to believe it's been that long ago that he died... he influenced so many guitar players... it was always the guys like him and Clapton that made me want to sell my gear and just quit...

He had a song on the 'Axis: Bold As Love' album called 'If 6 was 9'...  and there is a lyric in the song... that helped set myself in motion towards where I would be heading the rest of my Life... and that lyric is:

"I'm the one that's gotta die when it's time for me to die..."

I can remember the first time I read it... as if it was only yesterday...  it told me that I was responsible for myself... and that I need not worry about what others thought about me or said about me. It's not easy to do...

I wonder if I will be remembered 40 years after I am gone... I doubt it... but it's ok.  It's all part of the plan...

  1. I'm sure you will be remembered. You never know exactly how or when you have touched a life. I recently had someone tell me something I did and said years ago and how that helped them make a huge decision in their life...I never knew. I thought that was pretty cool.

  2. 1) I think that Carol is right. You just don't know who you have touched in this life journey. I think you will be remembered. You are a prof. and have touched so many lives. I think many people will remember LONG after you are gone.

    2) Sometimes I think we are asking the wrong questions. In other words, does it matter? I think that we come here to learn lessons to advance our own soul in our spiritual journey. Everything else is irrelevant. As long as we are doing what we came to do, then we are right where we are supposed to be. Does that make sense?

  3. When Jimi died he had been gearing up to play with one of my faves, Miles Davis... I can only imagine how TRULY awesome that would have been!!! And - look how much he influenced music WAY before his time... that's one great I wish was still around so I could have witnessed even more of his accomplishments...

As for you, sir... I'm thinking you are leaving your footprints and thumbprints on this world... you just seem to be the type to sink your teeth in and leave your mark... I'm thinkin' you won't be forgotten...

  5. I was going to do a post on Jimi myself, but you've done such a great job here that it can't be topped by anything I could say!

  6. The only way to be remembered 40 years after you die is to leave people for whom you made a major difference in their lives. Either that or have 10 kids, who have 10 kids each and then 10 kids, etc. And for which you've left lots of good memories; become a family legend.

  7. such a legend. daddy plays a wicked version of the hendrix star-spangled banner. when i was a little girl and wanted to be president, i always said that i'd have daddy play that anthem at my inaugural...

  8. I had no idea about his past...thanks for sharing! He'd done a lot in his short life and I don't know much of his music either, but that line that hit you hit me, too. It's one I'll share with that friend I wrote about the other day.

  12. @ Hi, Carol... You make a great point in that we often touch/help someone when we least expect we are... it's just when we are going about our lives of being who we are. It is wonderful that someone made you aware of what you had done for them! THAT is COOL!

Also... thank you for the award! I will collect!! :o)

@ Robin... you are SO right! What difference does it really make? You point out that we are here to move along in our journey and to grow... to learn those lessons! Anything else is mute! Thank you for that reminder!!

@ Red.Neck.Chic... yeah, I had forgotten about him wanting to work with Miles Davis. How great that would have been!!

Sinking my teeth in? What are you implying??
    ;o)

@ Heff.. LMAO @ his just having released a new album in the past 6 months... those crazy fukken family members... won't let a dead guy rest!

@ Catch Her... you give me WAY too much credit... I would LOVE to read your take on Jimi!

@ Charlene... have 10 kids?!?!? I don't THINK so.. I feel lucky to have survived the two I have!! :oD

@ Magnolia!! When you are elected, I will help your Dad play the Star Spangled Banner at your inauguration!!!

@ Ily... yeah, when I started working out the time line, he had done quite a bit in just a few years. That line from that song, and this other line from a research project I was doing really struck a chord with me. I live with those thoughts in my mind every day.

@ Darn Girl... it was suspected to be a drug overdose, even though there were allegations that he was even murdered. But all signs reflect towards drug overdose...

@ Nitebyrd... you are right about Janis! Just a few weeks later... October 4th. And in less than a year, Jim Morrison would die... I believe at the age of 27.

All in all, I'm just glad to be here! :oD

  13. Jimi died from inhalation of vomit. I have seen his death certificate[although he had acute Barbituate poisoning]. I blame the ambulance drivers.

Great post, I intend to post on this too.Hendrix has NOT been equaled nevermind surpassed btw.

And that is saying something as he used no more than a guitar & wah wah pedal.

  14. Isn't a gas when the kids say things like, "OMG! Jimi Hendricks rocked it raw, Mom. Did you like him?"

    Brings tears to my eyes.

This was a terrific post with intriguing info about him. Thanks!
