Elvin Bishop
Summer school ended this past week... we had the exams on Thursday... got the grades turned in Friday... This has been a tough summer... what with the death of Robert... and some other nonsense in which I didn't want to be involved...
My spiritual fuel tank is on low... I need to be rejuvenated... I posted HERE about a trip I made to Monument Valley... I think I posted that I felt that was one of the most spiritual places I've ever visited... And this past March, I visited Dealy Plaza and the Alamo in Texas... again... places.
This is the book I've been spending a great deal of time reading lately. I have consciously been on somewhat of a spiritual journey since the death of my Dad and my soon-to-occur divorce. I guess I have hoped that whatever I reached spiritually would help to heal some of the hurt... some of the pain... that I've endured.
Monument Valley
The Mittens and Merrick Butte
There is a chapter in the book titled, "Spiritual Geographies"... In this chapter, the authors say that some of us hold specific sites to be spiritual if they hold some meaning for us. Monument Valley affected me this way, but I can't explain the attraction... the draw... that places like this have over me. I just want to go...
In this book, something called "thin places" are mentioned... and they are defined as 'a place where a person experiences only a very thin divide between past, present, and future times." Monument Valley is such a place for me. Even this afternoon, TCM ran "The Searchers," a John Wayne movie filmed mostly on location in MV... and I just waited for visions of the familiar sites that I know are there.
One of the places I may head for is Arches National Park, in Utah...
The point of going somewhere...
is to simply see what is there.
These are such fragile structures... just in the past year or so, one of these arches collapsed... nothing lasts forever... nothing. But there is more to it than just going to see what is there. There is a draw... something calling me.
Another place I may head for, and it's close in proximity to Arches, is Bryce Canyon National Park...
"Any place where the Mystery breaks
through into our consciousness is Holy."
I believe this statement. I have never felt closer to God than I have at some of these fabulous places. Poet and essayist Kathleen Norris is said to have created the term 'spiritual geography' as a way to get at the peculiar and important ways a specific region speaks to our souls and transforms us.If I am really feeling ambitious, I may head for Sedona, AZ... if for no other reason than to spend some money in their economy...
Just one of the many beautiful scenes
located around Sedona, AZ
If I make it to Sedona, I may take a day and run up to the Grand Canyon... or maybe I will try to spend a day or two in Sante Fe, NM...Another great Elvin Bishop song...
So... if everything goes kinda ok...
I think I'm hitting the road Sunday morning...

@ Beryl: It was a road trip from Hell.. totally horrible timing from the standpoint of weather... blerk!!! It's good to be home...
@ Pat... yes it is... sometimes, it's that simple.. no?
@ Charlene... I did JUST that... Great music makes the miles seem to tick by a bit faster... however, that heat... MAN!!!
@ Big Pissy... yes, Sedona would have been wonderful... I just didn't make it... maybe next time... ;o) Have you ever been out there??
@ Bella... Good morning... There is such serenity there out there. I just didn't quite find what I needed from a spiritual standpoint on this trip... Maybe next time... :o)
@ Senorita... I want to come back to San Francisco so badly... this was going to be a driving trip... San Francisco would definitely be a flying trip... I do LOVE your city so much... I hope all is well for you... :o)
@ Magnolia... yes, clearing of the head and getting things straight. Today is my first day in the office in over a week... and talk about terminations is already starting... not what I need to hear... :o( My daughter lives in NOLA... she and her husband... they have become DIE HARD Saints fans!!! Hell, I would go down for that!!!
@ Hi there, Bathwater... how are you, my friend? I was safe... I am such a dumbass... when I was checking into my hotel in OKC, I went to give the clerk my Drivers license... and... I did NOT have it!!!! ARRGHH!!!! I went through an entire replay of where I last used it... I had to have it for a check I wrote... I had to have it for a blood donation I gave before I left on the trip... I drove VERY carefully, and was always SO paranoid when a law enforcement officer was behind me... ARGH!!
@ Ily... good morning!! I've been told that Miami is beautiful!! Ive never been there... what Spanish phrases would you teach me? and which ones would be most useful?? And why??? ;o)
I've never been on a cruise... I thought abouty taking one when I was contemplating the trip I just took. have you ever been on a cruise? I seem to remember a scary story about some folks who took a three HOUR tour... HA!!
I really like the book... I haven't really sat down and have read it through... instead, Ive used it more like a reference book, if that makes any sense. The comment I posted when my friend, Robert, died came from this book, but the odd thing is, that I have NOT been able to find it again. Do you read these kinds of books? If so, do you have any you would recommend??
@ Just Another Girl, Nope... this wasnt a north-bound trip... this was a West Bound trip... ;o) How are you today??
@ Jaime... you would be amazed at what happened to me... LMAO! ;o)
@ PeeDee... I did visit the Oklahoma Memorial... and I referenced your post about it... That was an unbelievable site.... How are you today??
@ 則V哲維治 (The V Zhewei governance); As I told建依萍彰, 什么他妈的!?!
@ Hi, Holly... all in all, the trip was fun... Getting away from here is always good...
@ Red.Neck.Chic... Traveling Shoes are fun... or can be... Re: The people you will meet, I was approached in a book store there in Sante Fe and was asked if I was a movie star... I didn't mean to laugh when asked... LOLOL I guess that gave the answer away... no? I've heard about counting mile markers... exit ramps... stuff like that... How are things in your neck of the woods??? :oD
