Thunderstorm at an unknown location
Memphis, TN / Olive Branch, MS have been hard hit the past few years... I'm not sure what it is about that area, but many severe thunderstorms and tornadoes seem to track through there...
I watched the weather system approach my area... and the system seemed to split... part went North of here... and the other stayed South... it was nice and sunny here...
Hell... I was at the ball park watching Alluvial Flood Plain State University dismantle the #1 nationally ranked Division II baseball team when people in the bleachers started talking about a tornado hitting Yazoo City...
The video above was made by Reed Timmer... one of the
I was surprised to see he was in Mississippi because the terrain, for the most part... doesn't lend itself well to watching these storms develop from a distance...
This is purported to be a photo of the tornado as it tore through Yazoo City...
I have no scale by which to measure the size of this tornado... I saw the largest tornado I've ever seen some years ago... and was just awed by the power and the size of that event...
This tornado is said to have been on the ground for several hours... and for a distance of at least 168 miles... and at times left paths of damage as much as two-miles wide...
The death toll from this storm, according to one source, has reached 12... and a Mississippi Farm Bureau senior claims adjuster I know told me yesterday that they have received over 1,000 property claims just from Yazoo City...
The National Weather Service is still studying the storm and its effects... they are uncertain if it was one huge storm, or possibly a front that created many tornadoes along the path...
Tornadoes are rated according to a method called The Fujita Scale...
This tornado, according to some sources I have read has been classified as an EF4... several sources say it may have been an EF5... This photo has also been attributed to the Yazoo City storm...
These storms can be so beautiful... I am addicted to thunder storms... I love this kind of weather... I have been known to go out and chase a few... but when there is property damage... and lives are lost... things change... you know??

I too like storms; they provide the much needed excuse to sit and do nothing.
ReplyDeleteI sat with baited breath as I witnessed this tremendous storm erupt before my eyes. Astonishing. Scary and life threatening, but I have so much admiration for the people who risk life n limb to get these Tornados on film. Captivating truly.

:)
I love storms. I love how quiet and eerie it gets just before. It's uncommon to have tornadoes here, but storms, often. I like the dark skies and the smell of rain.
ReplyDeleteI love thunderstorms. As a kid I used to sit at my bedroom window in the top of the house, and watch. My sister would scream and run downstairs but I'd sit right there on my toy box and watch.
ReplyDeleteAfter the 1974 tornado here in Louisville I started going to the basement if there was one.
That storm front plowed through Florida here Sunday night but didn't spin up any funnels to speak of. However, my hair stood on end for hours in the electrical net that was cast over my place by spectacular bursts of multi-pronged lightning. Insane tendrils of it spread out on the sky making it look like a broken black bowl. I, too, am energized and do wild things when a wicked storm like that sparks up out of nowhere.
ReplyDeletei can't imagine chasing after those storms and getting so close! man, keep me in jersey REALLY far away from that stuff!
ReplyDeleteStorms like that humble me every time.
ReplyDeleteThose storm chasers must have a death wish or something.
Another reason I am happy to live in California.
I just love seeing that kind of weather too, there is something fascinating about it.
ReplyDeleteThese are scary...I cant believe the photos and footage you have..storms are the great equalizer...everyone is vulnerable to them, no matter who you are..
ReplyDeleteI like storms, too. But while I was living in Florida a few years back, three hurricanes hit our town in one month. It was pretty scary and incredibly exhausting. Gave me a whole new perspective.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, though, I still love a good thunderstorm!!
Storms do so fascinate me too....the power of Mother Nature can be unrelenting!!

Man-0-Man-0-Man-0-Man... I am SO glad this week is over... it's been insanely busy around here... blerk!!!!!!
ReplyDelete@ JenJen... I'm not sure what it is about a storm... I just love them... I adore being in the middle of them... and "storm sex" is better than "make-up sex"... :oD
@ Indi... yeah, I agree.. Reed Timmer, who is cited in that post, got caught in a very serious tornado last year, and imo, was lucky to not have been killed... I'm not certain how much of what he does is for 'research'... and how much is 'thrill'... not that there is anything wrong with that... ;-)
@ Spring Flower... yeah... that 'calm'... that's when i can tell that a storm is really going to be bad... it gets deathly still... oh... and 'green' skies... I havent seen many of them, but when those storm clouds get greenish, one had better batten down the hatches... Oh... the smell of rain... the only thing better is the smell of freshly mown grass... :o)
@ Charlene.. I like to watch them approach... you can see the lightning off in the distance... and the approach of the storm until suddenly it is upon you...
@ Linnnn.. I LOVE the analogy of the electrical web... WOW... unless the lightning is striking close to me, I love watching a great lightning show... Hmmm... you do wild things?? Please share.. :oD
@ Jaime... I chased a system a few years ago... saw many funnel clouds... and 5 tornadoes... they werent that well developed... but it was unreal to watch them drop from the cloud down to the ground...
@ Senorita... yeah, the power of things like that really can make someone realize how fragile everything in this world is... and how much energy Mother Nature creates on her own!!!
@ Bathwater... me too!!! I always love to see the systems approach... we are under a severe thunderstorm watch for tonight and all day tomorrow... the NWS has forecasted as much as 7" of rain for our area over that time span!!!
@ Robin... Yep... Mother Nature does not play favorites!!!
@ Joan @ 'Anything Fits...' Yeah... I remember when in that short time, you all had so many hurricanes track through that area... totally unbelievable!!!
@ Southern Girl... I know!!!! So relenting.. and SO beautiful!!!
