"GrandMother Brown... and my kids..."

I posted some time back about my Grand Mother Brown... how attached to her I feel... in spite of never having known her... she died in 1929...

I posted about her here... about how my Dad wished he had bought a 'nicer' headstone for her when she died... and how it bothered him...  In this photo is Mary Jane Coles Brown... her daughter, Winifred... and her son, Curtis... my Dad...

Aunt Winnie was a hoot... She told Dad that his birth in 1906 was the cause of the San  Francisco earthquake that year...

Dad had told me this story once... about something that had happened when he was 6 years old...  it seems that some fellow shot and killed the mailman in their town... the perpetrator was arrested... tried... found guilty... and sentenced to death by hanging...

Dad said his Dad took him to the hanging that day... it was in the town square... and much like what you see on TV in the westerns... it was THE event... everyone was there...  Dad said that law enforcement brought this fellow out... marched him up the steps to the gallows... placed the noose over his head... and then a black bag...

... and this fellow pulled a lever... and...

Dad said the next thing he knew, he was coming to in the doctor's office... and the news around town was that "Curtis Brown and two other women fainted at the hanging today..."

Dad had many great stories... when he died, I was asked to write his obituary... and I did... and I included as many stories as I could... some papers cut the obituary to the minimum... the basics... but the news paper down in the state capitol always had one lead obit... and it was always embellished...   It was such a neat final notice... in that the reader really got to know who had died... instead of knowing whether it was a stroke... or a heart attack...

I still don't understand the attraction to my grand mother... but something is there...
____________

I also found these great photos of Girlshoes and Boyshoes...

They were taken on Easter Day... obviously  after the Easter Bunny had visited the Shoes house...  Girlshoes' expression doesn't change a great deal between pics, but Boyshoes' goes from a mischievous look to a pouty look... he still has both of those facial expressions today... the girls just adore that kid... and those suspenders!! Oh... and he's WAY too cool to hold HIS basket... it has to be on the ground so he can be cool... whereas Girlshoes is holding everything she got... much the way she is today...

God, I LOVE my kids...
______________

Here, years later... Easter has changed... GirlShoes is married and lives in NOLA... Boyshoes is in his last semester at Alluvial Flood  Plain State University...

I cooked and asked Boyshoes and Girlfriendshoes to come over... and they did... we had a blast...

From time to time, I read some blogs out there where people are saying that they can NOT wait for their kids to grow up... please enjoy each and every moment... because one of these days... and it's going to be sooner than you think... they WILL grow up... and you will be posting photos of them like I am tonight...

Girlshoes and Boyshoes...
I love you two each and everyday...

GrandMother Brown...
You are always in my thoughts...

  2. I've always wondered about my great-grandmother. I have her old poetry in Yiddish. Her English wasn't even that good, and she faced a lot of rejection when mailing out her work, but it still means something.

  8. Well, I bitch about my kids - I do. They're little and it's their job to test me. That said? I do NOT FOR SECOND want them to get bigger or grow up. It's obviously the way of the world. But i'd prefer them to stay sweet and innocent forEVER.

Make that happen, will ya? ;)

  9. I loved this post. That picture of your Grandmother Brown is AWESOME. When I first saw the picture of your kids I thought *IT* was an antique picture also.

I too wwant my kids to stay small. They say the funniest stuff--and they keep us young (and sleep deprived).
