"Saturday Blues"

Back in 1994, Eric Clapton put together a recording of his versions of some great old Blues standards...  the name of the CD was "From The Cradle"... which was shortened from an old saying of going "From the cradle to the grave..."

One of my favorite recordings from that CD was an old Eddie Boyd song... "Five Long Years"... If you listen to these, make sure you turn the volume on your speakers way up... they sound so much better loud!!

I think this is a great video because it's live... it's in a rehearsal scenario... and it's so heart felt... from a vantage point of being a guitar player, I can't think of much of anything that sounds better than a Fender Stratocaster being played through an over-driven tube amp... they do just take on a life of their own...

Another favorite from that CD is "I'm Tore Down"... an old Freddy King standard... it's too bad that it's taken people like Clapton... or Stevie Ray Vaughan... or older bands like the Rolling Stones or the Animals to get some of the old great blues legends the honor they deserve...

Man... that Gibson ES 335 sounds good through an over-driven tube amp as well...

In both of these videos, Clapton used a blues-style of playing that is referred to as "Call-And-Response"... He sings a verse... and then plays a guitar riff to respond to what he sang... B.B. King does a great deal of this... as a matter of fact, B.B. has been quoted as having said that he can not play and sing at the same time... however, he's done quite well....

Another old great bluesman is a fellow by the name of Buddy Guy... but most people haven't ever heard of him... and it's a shame... he's an outstanding and outrageous guitarist... Jimi Hendrix and Clapton always cited Guy as being a major influence in their education as to how to play the Blues...

Clapton and George Harrison were great friends... Harrison had Clapton play the guitar solo on the BeaTle song, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"... they were great friends, but that didn't keep Clapton from falling in love with Patti Boyd Harrison, George's wife... and eventually stealing her away from George and marrying her... and of course, after a while, she was very unceremoniously dumped...  However, George and Eric remained great friends... and referred to each other as 'husbands-in-law'...

It was about the time that Clapton met Patti that he started singing "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" a great deal... and he said he was singing that for Patti...  At some point in time, Clapton formed a band called 'Derek and the Dominoes'... they recorded 'Have you ever loved...' as well as a song by the name of 'Layla'... a song that Clapton wrote and said was a profession of his love for Patti...

Musicians and artists seem to have a great deal of angst in their lives...  I was an art major for the first 2 1/2 years of my college life...  I think that creative side still comes out in my guitar playing and my teaching method... which seems to be very different from the more linear-thinking profs we have in the College of Business here at Alluvial Flood Plain State University...

Sometimes I think we try to over-simplify Life... if it was that easy, there wouldn't be so many fucked-up people in the world...

  1. Thanks for these great blues songs. I love BB King. I'll always remember his performance as the warm-up act at a Rolling Stones Concert I attended way back when. That was one heckuva musical night.

  2. Thank you, Catch Her... B.B. was born and raised not far from where I live... and he comes 'home' each June to play a show in his hometown... Music is a great passion of mine... whether I go to hear/see a performer, or if I am getting to play myself...

  5. I love that you add so much information to your posts like these. So much better than those that dump a video and ask for feedback.

  6. *Good morning, Darn Girl... yeah, I can't imagine either... other than writing about love, the only other real-life events that I am aware that Clapton wrote about was the loss of his son. He wrote 'Tears in Heaven' and a song about the day he took Conner to the circus ('The Day The Circus Came To Town' I think is the name of the song...)

Good morning, Tee and JenJen... I enjoy music... it's one of the few positive constants in my Life... when I was playing on YouTube and found the songs, I didn't initially think about posting them, but then a host of trivial nonsense either about the songs or the musicians came to mind... and I thought it might be interesting... :o)

  9. * Secretia... yeah, Clapton has had a fantastic career... but a sad sad life... if you recall, it was his helicopter that crashed in Alpine Valley that August... Stevie Ray Vaughan talked Clapton into changing flights with him so he could get back to Chicago... definitely some tough tough times in his life...

    * Good morning, Bathwater... yeah, I tell you... absolutely NOTHING linear about me...
and yes, I think a nonlinear math teacher would be worse!!!!!
