In 1974, the band would go into the studio to record their next release... looking for a bit more of an edge to their sound, they utilized the services of a studio musician by the name of Don Felder...
Don Felder
... and it was during the making of this album that Felder was asked to become a member of the band.
To me, this marked a definite change in the sound of their music and would begin to steer them towards the high point of their existence...
... one of the songs from this time would be 'Already Gone'... a great break up song...
The guitar work on this album has more of an edge than what had existed on the previous two efforts... and a great deal of this is due to Felder's influence...
For me, this next song shows Felder at his best... at least for at this stage of the Eagles' career...
"A Good Day In Hell"
His slide guitar work on this song is phenomenal...
I think...
Another great song from this effort is...
"James Dean"
Now, they hadn't totally forsaken the formula that got them notoriety...
also included on this album was...
"Best Of My Love"
This song is greatly reminiscent of what they had
done on their previous two albums...
Henley, Felder, Frey, Leadon, Meisner
There were changes to be made to this line up that would redefine who
The Eagles were, and what their future would be...

Hey Shoes, I'm loving these Eagles posts. Great great band, and I agree that they really come alive when Felder joins the band. I took his biography "Heaven and Hell" to the beach with me this past summer, and it's a fun read. Also, I know I'm jumping ahead, but have you seen this:

Good morning, Max!
DeleteThanks for the link to the 'Hotel California' lesson given by Don Felder!
I can see that was an appropriate name for what being with that band must have been like!
Tell me about your mandolin playing...

Ah yes... now that you have pointed out Felder and his slide guitar I can hear the influence. They still sound Southern Rock, but with a bit of "edge" as you say. I have always liked Already Gone and Best of My Love (which is, indeed, much softer and more like the songs on their first two albums). The other two were new to me. As much as James Dean fascinates me as a person, the song became a bit repetetive for my taste. And I grew up on 80s music... so go figure. But, I really liked the first one. A sidenote: Hedley is an attractive guy. It's in the eyes, I think. He looks better to me when his face isn't obscured by all of the beard.
ReplyDeleteGood afternoon, Robin...
DeleteIt is easy to break down their sound according to the composition of the band... Felder did take them to another level...
Yes, Felder is a good looking fellow!
... and to me, it is interesting in regard to the influence that J. D. Souther had on all of their music...
I hope you are having a great weekend!!

I would delete and try again on my previous comment, but I am having difficulty getting my pages to load and mouse to work right?!?!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, meant Felder and not Hedley. Don't know where I even got that... strange.
This exceptional post reminds me that I need to make more room in my life for music.
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Stephen... I seem to feel better when I allow music into my environment!
DeleteHow are you doing??
