Postings of whatever crosses my mind that I perceive to be relevant to the World as I view it... Rational...Irrational... Sane... Insane... Who gets to make that call?? I DO!!!
This song was going to go up on my blogspot on the day I put a million songs up. Friday.
I remember exactly where I was when I saw this movie too--
I don't know if this is humor or just strange.
I was in the Greenwood (Mississippi) hospital many many many many moons ago keeping my cousin company while she stayed with her 2-year old niece whom had gotten admitted to the hospital for pneumonia.
I loved that movie. Although, it did rather depress me at the time that he killed himself.
Thank u for putting this up as I am in a mood to be traveling down back roads. I thought this weekend I sure wish I could go visit my grandparents' graves in Greenwood. I have been thinking about planting a rose bush near my grandmother's headstone. She loved roses.
For some reason, I always remember this song every June 3rd... HA!
I didn't like the movie... my recollection was that it made fun of the South. We have enough stereotypes to overcome without some studio's perception of what the song was about.
Oops--this movie was playing that night when we stayed over that night at the hospital. I never forgot it. In fact, that particular niece got married recently and I told her this story of staying with her in the hospital.
You know, Chris... I hadn't thought about what she probably looks like today... like you, I did a search and found nothing. What did amaze me was that back in the day when she was totally hot, she up and married Jim Stafford ('I Don't Like Spiders And Snakes').
Great song. It is a unique story song in that while telling a story it creates as many questions as it does answers. How many songs actually do that? Not many. I think that is why it is so darn haunting. Why did Billy Joe jump off that bridge? What did they throw off the bridge before he jumped? Why??? What??? I know that they made a movie, but they were only guessing...
That movie and all was filmed not far from where I live. When we all caught gist of the story line was going to be for the movie, we were shocked. No one read that into the song. Many thought maybe she had a miscarriage or some other kind of event.
I don't remember that but it was a long time ago that I saw the movie. I was but just a child. But I liked it. I guess I liked the southern things I remember. The dusty roads, the country, the country talk--
I don't care whether people think we are dumb or not. Southern. We are the most open and loving group. Our simplicity makes us lovable.
I did not realize that there was significance to the June 3rd date until I pulled up my Facebook. As u know, I have lots and lots of relatives that live in or near Greenwood. And on that day, my Facebook was bombarded with "Ode to Billy Joe" Pics of the Tallahatchie River. Photos and whatnot. I felt rather silly later on telling u that that was just strange that I was going to put that song up on my selection that Friday or whatever day it was last week. On well, I just love the south. Period. Books, movies, recipes whatnot. I told my Dad when he asked me why I just all of a sudden moved back to Memphis from North Carolina. And I said "I had to go home." After 16-years in NC, Memphis was calling me back. And I do what I always do. What I feel and usually it turns out all right for me in the end.
Wow--funny that u posted this song.

ReplyDeleteHaunting. This is very haunting too me.
I googled and couldn't find a current photo of her... wondering what she's been up to?
