"A Day Late...

... and a dollar short."

I totally missed a musically significant day yesterday.  I discovered half of the problem when I read Cocaine Princess' blog post (HERE)... and it's that yesterday, August 16, was the 35th anniversary of Elvis's death... August 16, 1977.

young Elvis...

Do you know that 35 years after his death, mourners still flock to Memphis to visit his grave site?

Elvis Mourners...

Elvis Impersonators...

Evidently, there is a lot of money to be made by impersonating the King...  a band by the name of Dread Zeppelin took it to the next level...  setting Led Zeppelin music to a reggae beat and sung by a fat Elvis impersonator...

Did you know that Elvis was IS a Zombie? And that they made a movie about it??

Zombie Elvis...

Fat Elvis...
(Not Really...)

Whatever your thoughts, Elvis could bring it...

Another music event that occurred on August 16, is that 50 years ago yesterday...

...The BeaTles fired Pete Best as their drummer

and replaced him with Richard Starkey...

Better known as...

Ringo Starr...

One a more somber note, we had our 'Back-To-School' meetings today here at Alluvial Flood Plain State University...

Blah...

  1. Who says Elvis is dead? Someone I know posted on Facebook that she saw Elvis yesterday at a Speedway buying a 44 oz fountain pepsi , bag of cheetos , 6 tornadoes , and a box of Susie Q's in Fort Wayne , Indiana. Lol! Oh and a bag of pork rinds.

  2. Better late than never, my friend. 35 years and people still worship and adore him and that's why he's The King.

PS. My sister attends her back to school meetings next week. I assure you that she too shares your "somber" mood.

    1. Good afternoon, Princess. Your sister teaches? Bless her heart. I do have to admit that it has been one of the most fulfilling things I've ever done in my Life.

  3. Love this post. For one...I totally got a kick out of Dread Zeppelin. Elvis can totally ROCK (and I think we are genetically made from the same hips) and yesterday was my sons 25th birthday! So it was really fun to see trivia info on his birth date! Thanks Shoes :) Oh...and Obese Elvis??? Does that come in a Ken Doll?

  5. Elvis was so fluid. I think that he literally made music come alive. There was dancing before Elvis, but there was not dancing like THAT. The way he danced had people's eyes popping out of their heads. Every part of him moved with the music. So interesting to watch the other dancers trying to keep pace in the video. You could see that they were trying emulate the style, but they never quite understood that their HIPS had to move in order for it to work... lol. So, they ended up looking completely wooden next to him. Elvis was another person who I don't think set out to change the world of music as we know it, but he did. How could it ever go back after him? Elvis kicked off Rock Music and Dancing. I think the next person who actually embraced the phenom the way he did was Michael Jackson. These people don't seem to have stories that end well, do they???? You put MJ and Elvis side by side and you will see two people who move with the music. Their movement is literally an extension of the music. Crazy talented they were. Maybe when you burn that hot your candle is going to go out faster. I don't know...

    1. Hi there, Robin... What Elvis had is something that just can't be taught. One of the magic words that one tends to hear in business school today is 'entreprenureship.'

I'm of the opinion that 'entreprenureship' can NOT be taught. It's innate... it's an energy, or a goal, or some internal drive that can not be taught.

There are many successful entrepreneurs without a formal business education.

An entertainer can't be taught what those like Elvis already knew how to do.

      How are things with you?

  6. I've long known of the anniversary of Elvis' death - it's just two days after my birthday - but I had no idea about the Pete Best/Ringo Starr transition. Thanks!

    1. Hi there, Jack...

I didn't know about the Best/Starr thing either until I found it while digging for something else...

I hope all is well with you.

  7. I loved visiting Graceland. Blue shag carpet and a white couch how delightfully tacky! Proving one thing you can take the boy out of Mississippi but you can't take Mississippi out of the boy! :)
