I was reading another blog this morning about the commercialization of our religious holidays... Primarily Christmas and Easter. I remember being a kid and being SO excited about the approach of Christmas... I would think of all the things I would want Santa to bring, and to a lesser extent, Easter, and hunting for Easter eggs and what other goodies the Easter Bunny might leave.
I did pass these traditions on to my kids...
Buried in those times of receiving, was the story of the birth of Jesus, and of His crucifixion and His rising from the Dead... but being a kid, I was more interested in the toys and candies... I learned to put those things into perspective... my perspective, over my Life time.
I remember trying to figure out just why every year that one could find 'The Ten Commandments' on Television every Easter season... there isn't an Easter Story in there...
As I grew up, and learned more... I was able to understand and place everything in its proper perspective...
I understood the story of Passover... I didn't at the time, as well as the significance of other important Jewish holidays... I understood better the stories of the birth of Jesus and possibly, from a Christian standpoint, the greater story of His Death and Resurrection...
My Mom and Dad selected a local Methodist church for my 'litter' of kids to attend as we were growing up. My oldest litter mate eventually married a Baptist and changed churches... I remained a Reprobate Methodist...
I recall my brother inviting me to come and listen to a speaker that they were having this one Wednesday night... I asked him to tell me about the speaker, and he told me...
"He used to be Catholic, but he's saved now..."
... and my mind just reeled...
I don't understand why one group of people are so offended or put off by another group's religious beliefs... I don't understand why, over the time of recorded history, so many people have been killed in the name of God... or a god or group of gods...
My best friend at work is Hindu, and over the time I have known him, we have had many interesting conversations about religion and spirituality... He is very accepting of others' religious beliefs, and doesn't put anyone down for what they believe. Maybe this is where I have developed my idea of being more spiritual than religious.
I think for one to have a religious belief system is good... even being agnostic or atheistic doesn't offend me. My personal belief system has become very much of a 'cut-and-paste' belief... and I am ok with that...
I'm not sure where I am going with this post... other than to say that I wish people of one belief weren't so hard on people with other beliefs... Obviously, I have problems with those belief systems that allow the injury/death/mayhem of others...
Anyhoo... Happy Easter to those who celebrate Easter... and Happy Passover to my Jewish friends... and if there are any other religious holidays at are occurring at this time, I've omitted them entirely due to ignorance on my part, and no intended religious snub.

Happy Easter, Shoes.
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter to you as well! What a great photo on your blog today!!

happy easter to you! well said. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter, Shoes. It always confused me how Christians can say other Christians are "wrong".
ReplyDelete@ Magnolia & Jessica... thank you so much! Happy Easter to the both of you! Jessica, me too... I am amazed that Christians can have so much in common, yet, differ on the smallest of issues... and those differences become HUGE!!!
ReplyDeleteI was so shocked at the comment my brother made re: Catholics.
Maybe my 'easy-going'ways is often misinterpreted as a weakness, but I am anything BUT weak...

The cartoons/pictures made me giggle.
ReplyDeleteMy family believes that he rises on Easter, and if he sees his shadow there will be six more weeks of winter.
We're sort of irreverent.
Happy Easter! Great informative post.
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter to you, from another cutter and paster of spiritual beliefs.
ReplyDeleteMy kids are celebrating Spring today. 'Cause you know, 'cause candy and all manner of chocolate bloom in the Spring.
I'm not at all confused by religion. To me, one is as good as another. I was born Baptist and converted to Catholic when I married.
ReplyDeleteWhat confuses me is politics and religion. Like Rand Paul, our new Kentucky Senator who was named after Ayn Rand, an athiest, and who believes all that she shrugged while standing up and asking evangelical Christians to support him. Sigh
*giggle*
ReplyDeleteI like your last picture hot stuff. LMBO!!!!!!!!
I don't think any religion is "right" or "wrong"... I think it's all in how/what each person needs to believe in order to keep the faith...
I grew up Baptist - switched to Methodist in high school - college had me as Church of Christ...
Life sees me as a believer in my God.

Hop on over here... I have a basket you can fill...

p.s. Happy Easter!
Spiritual, not religious - works for me. Most everyone I knew growing up were members of The Birth and Resurrection Society but that was still too much for me.
ReplyDeleteHope you had some chocolate and jelly beans!
Hope your Easter was happy. I consider myself to be more spiritual than religious, too. Religion implies propaganda to me, while spiritual is more about your connection with God or the Universe.
ReplyDeletehope you had a good easter, shoes.
ReplyDeleteI believe what I choose to, you believe what you choose too & they can believe what they choose too. There is no right or wrong. Ultimately it is about being a better person and doing the right things. Most are praying to a higher calling and I am pretty sure that is how it is supposed to be.
ReplyDeleteHappy (late) Easter!
great post, loved the easter bunny pun about making one fat...too cute.
ReplyDeleteAs far as religion, I don't care much at all for organized religion, I'm much too spiritual for that really...I think people only go to church to be with others who can't live in their own spirituality and have that the need to be around others like themselves. It doesn't phase me in the least which religion or which church or any of that stuff, because its not about that truly. To each their own path.
I was raised Baptist, married in a Presbyterian church, served as a groomsman in a Catholic wedding of a friend, and on Easter this year we went to a Methodist church.
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a great Easter too Shoes!!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Vodka& Chocolate = amazing!
Intolerance, especially when it flows from my fellow Christian brothers and sisters, makes my blood boil. I'm POSITIVE it makes Jesus pretty mad, too. Fortunately, there are many of us who are accepting, tolerant, and follow the "lead with love" principle. Unfortunately, the intolerant crazies yell louder, getting all the attention. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteGreat points you make, Shoes. As long as we all believe in something higher/larger than ourselves that's all that matters.
