"Traveling Shoes... The Grand Canyon..."

For purple mountain majesties...

I've posted twice about my October Road Trip out West... I've posted photos of Monument Valley HERE  and of a BEAUTIFUL sunset HERE ...

Here are my photos of the Grand Canyon... again, I totally credit my new digital camera for how wonderful I feel these photos turned out...

From the observation platform at Desert View, South Rim

About 15 miles straight out from this view point is the North Rim of the Grand Canyon...  There is a great sensory overload here... so much to see... almost too much to see... How can something this majestic... this unbelievable... this beautiful... have SO much going on in one place!?!?!

I was so taken aback by all of the colors that appear in the layers of different rock and stone that are tiered down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon...

On the Trail to Phantom Ranch...

We had decided to take about a 5 mile hike down the face of the Grand Canyon on the Trail that will eventually take one to Phantom Ranch, a lodge that is located on the floor of the Grand Canyon.  This lodge is so popular that one has to arrange reservations almost a year in advance.  It was so overcast... so cold... and at one point, the sun broke through and lit up this formation in the Canyon...

On the Trail to Phantom Ranch...

Scenery like this makes me feel SO insignificant... so small...  When one figures and thinks about what all has transpired on this planet in the millions of years it's taken to form this Canyon... and how our existence on that time line is just a speck in time...

As we were driving from Desert View to Grand Canyon Village, we saw this HUGE herd of elk just off to the side of the highway...  I am estimating that there must have been about 15 or so of them... and this one majestic bull elk...

What a country we have... How fortunate I feel to have been born in this Land...

God Bless America...

  2. No matter how many times I view pictures of the Grand Canyon, I'm still awestruck! Such a beautiful, tremendous place! But I must admit, my favorite pic is still the one of the elk! Thanks so much for posting these, Shoes!!

  4. The whole reason to travel is to bring yourself back into life. The details and irritating dramas of every day life pale by comparison.

  6. good grief shoes... those photos are just breathtaking!!! i am in AWE of the two where the sun is breaking through!!! proof that every cloud holds sunshine...

i still say... it's not the camera - it's the photographer's eye and his ability to catch the beauty in everything...

  8. I think it must feel a little bit like looking at God. After all, it is some of God's best stuff.

  9. @ Spring Flower... good morning!! Thank you! I know that Canada has equally amazing scenery!! I hope to see some of it some day!!!

@ Anything Fits...I was so surprised to see such a large herd of elk grazing there right beside the highway... Maybe it was my imagination, but I thought the cow elks were making eyes at this fellow... ;o)

@ Nitebyrd... It is an amazing area... really something spectacular to see...

@ Charlene... you are SO right about this. So often, we all seem to get caught up in more petty and mundane nonsense, when in reality, there is so much out there that connects us.

@ Just Another Girl... Thank you... :o) I hope all is well with you today!!!

@ Gobbles... the sunlight breaking through and highlighting that ridge was just awe-inspiring... I felt fortunate to be on the side of the canyon so that I could see that!!

Have I ever told you that I have 'Marty Feldman' eyes... it's amazing the stuff I see... :oD

@ Heff... I'm ALWAYS needing new shoes!!! :oD

@ Robin... once, I was on a canoe trip with my best friend, Barry... we had gotten out of our boats just to sit and take in the scenery, and his comment to me was something along the lines of 'Not being able to feel any closer to God than he was at that moment...' I totally understood what he was telling me...

  10. Oh Shoes, these pictures are great! Makes me want to go. We have plans of going after my Hubz retires in 3 more years. When I am out in nature like this I feel like I am in the best kind of church! It makes me feel so small and all my problems seemm small too. God puts it all right here for the taking but we get so wrapped up in our day to day lives...we forget to look and see it. thanks for sharing your photos. I loved them.

  17. @ Carol... the photos don't do the scenery any justice. When I am in a place like that, I am in awe of everything. I agree that being in that kind of surrounding is the best kind of church... at least for me. This is why I wanted to get out here back in August after my friend, Robert, died. I just needed to settle and get things back in perspective... you know?

@ Hi there, Lynn... thank you, but I credit the camera... Mother Nature is responsible for the vista... ;o)

@ Jaime... the secret is to take TONS of photos... I recall reading about a National Geographic Photographer years ago...and he wrote of how many rolls of film he had to shoot just to get 4 or 5 usable photos for an article... YIKES!!!

@ Senorita.. it was a WONDERFUL trip!! Being in places like that help me ground myself... You DO need to go... you would love it, given the travel lust that you seem to enjoy!!!

@ Villa... thank you for stopping by and for the nice comments!! :o)

@ KittyCat... then you need to go BACK!!! Thank you for stopping by! I will return the visit!!!

@ Tuppence!!! Hey you!! I am so happy for how things are going for you!! I was so excited to read your post the other evening!!! The Grand Canyon is amazing; yet, I would LOVE to see Stone Henge... So many great places... so little time!!!

  18. I am awed by the notion that ALL of that was under an inland sea eons ago...And humbled by the notion that it could happen again! We better take care of this planet...

  19. @ Linnnn... I KNOW!!! Millions of years past, that was all ocean bed!! I've read somewhere that there is a great site where there are all kinds of skeletal remains of whale-like creatures!!
