"Memorial Day, 2014..."

In Flanders Fields
John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead; short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe!
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high!
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields

There was a young fellow who came to our country as an exchange student from France...he wound up at our university and made quite an impact.  He was quick to make friends and seemed to put 100% into anything and everything he did...

He loved this country... and later joined the military...

Captain Patrick Marc Rapicault

... the Marines, to be exact.

I've read somewhere that he was a SEAL...

That wouldn't have surprised me...

Take a few moments to read
this story that is linked...

watch the embedded video...

and see 'Frenchy'...

Take another few moments

and read the remarks that are left

He would appreciate it...

So... what are you doing today?

  1. One be knows what someone truly meant to them or the impact one has on someone's life and they pass away.

Chad Wade whom is my high school friend's son whom steppes in I.E.D--that is how I ran across ur blog. She could not Facebook anymore so she choose to blog her sorrow. Boyette's Babble.

I should never have known u had it not been for his death.

Our lives we touch many and we do not realize the impact they have on us.

I lost my grandfather in war. I have had many I knew closely whom were in military. They r still alive. But many have lost sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, the list goes on.

    We should always remember. Always.

  2. Aloha Shoes,

Wow... words nearly fail me... *thank* you for this tribute to Cpt. Rapicault and after reading the story, and especially the comments from his brothers-in-arms, it makes me want to weep.

Thank God for men and women like Capt. Rapicault that stood (stand) up for us and help to protect our nation and its values.

Long may his memory live on.

"... cos it never rains there (in a pub)..."

What a fantastic quote this is!!!

That poem was written back in 1915... John McRae read it at the funeral of a friend of his that was killed either at the First Battle of Ypres or the Second Battle... I can't remember...

      How are you today, dear?

  4. A heartfelt "oorah" to Captain Rapicault and his family that he left behind.

I spent a few moments remembering my first hubby. He died when I was 27 and is buried in a veteran's cemetery. So, these holidays always make me think of him even though he didn't die in action.

But, I didn't let it get me down - I spent a great day with my hubby and kids.

Hope all is well with you, Shoes.

  6. This is such a beautiful post.

Our own memorial day, ANZAC Day (in April), always touches me very deeply. I can't help but feel very grateful to the men and women who have given their lives, who live to tell the narrative of war, who have provided me with the life I'm free to live today.

    Beautiful post, shoes...

    1. Hi there, you...

I am quite familiar with ANZAC Day! It is a brave group of people who will go into that kind of environment knowing that they may well not come back...

In our Society, where we have celebrities etal, claiming to be 'heroes' have no concept of what being a 'Hero' is really all about...

I hope all is well for and with you, dear...

  8. To first see his smiling face and then his grave... such a cruel contrast. "That's life," some would say. I don't know what that means.

  9. Hi there, Grumpster... how are you, my friend?

    Are you getting better?

"Frenchy" was one Hell of a nice guy... but he was doing what he loved to do... taking care of his men...

As I stated above, he is the definition of "Hero"...

    1. Getting better in my dreams. Does that count too? No? I thought so. Yes, he's a hero but I'd rather he were alive.
