"Ice Storm..."

Or...

Uh Oh...

Classes were cancelled here at Alluvial Flood Plain State University today... we were under an ice storm warning today... the temperature hovered right at freezing, and we got some ice, but it wasn't bad...

The Weather Channel just said we had between 1/4" and 3/8" of ice to accumulate... but not in my part of town.

Back in the Winter of '94... Brrrr.... we had the ice storm from Hell come through the Mississippi Delta...

That photo above looks just like what happened here 19 years ago...  I have weathered tornadoes and such, but have never seen anything that looked quite like what was experienced here.

Over a period of three days, it rained and rained and rained... and froze... the trees were so loud when they snapped under the pressure of all of the ice...

The utility crews that came into our area to assist with rebuilding the power grid said that they had worked many hurricanes, but had never seen such wide spread, consistent destruction associated with a storm.

We were without power at my house for over 8 days...

This looks like something that Robelyn  at Red.Neck Chic  would own...

The accumulated ice on trees and all is really a pretty sight...

... but terribly destructive...

The entire power grid in North West Mississippi had to be rebuilt...

I don't mind missing work... we will have to make it up... but I don't want to be without power for extended periods of time...

I don't want trees breaking... snapping... and falling through my house.

Brrrr.........

  1. "Would own"... Shoot. It's in my front yard right now!!! I guess I didn't see you with your camera!!! Did the dogs bark at you? The redneck neighbors threaten you with buck-shot?

They keep teasing my 'hood with forecasts of snow and ice and I really want some so that I can skate off my porch. But then - I skate off my porch in the summer, so...

I would hate to go for so long without power!!!

  2. Good luck. I have to say though seeing Southerners in ice is kind of like seeing our cats chase this laser light we have. They run and slide around with no concept of what they are doing!

But seriously good luck. Do you have a good stock of fire wood?

    1. I'm good with snow... now ice scares me.I was fortunate enough to survive a spin a few years ago when I hit a patch of black ice while going about 70 mph... a great deal of luck assured that there was no on-coming traffic and I missed a concrete bridge rain by just feet.

I have plenty of firewood.. the neighbor has a nice fence... :oD

  6. They called for the same crap up here. No accumulation yet. Ice storms are beautiful... in someone else's yard. No thanks.

  7. Good morning, Steven...

We seem to have dodged the worst of the ice... no snow, unfortunately... I love snow.

    Ice storms are so destructive...

How are things in your world??

  9. These are very familiar sights to me, since I came from New Hampshire and lived on a mountain top. Now, I am a weather wimp living in Florida. Good luck.

  11. Shoes, the only ice I like looks a bit like THIS. Something tells me you agree. But seriously, I wish you the best of luck, buddy. I mean, ice storms suck, period, full stop, and then some. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. 'I have plenty of firewood.. the neighbor has a nice fence...' That's so funny.

  12. 8 days without power? OMG! The longest we've gone without power because of the weather is about 9hours. I can't even begin to imagine 8 days. Up here where I live we're pretty much use to snow storms.

    That 4th pic is amazing.

That photo of that ice encased tree is amazing!

    1. Good morning, Kimberly... it seems that the ice that formed was manageable... and that the snow went south and east of us...

Still... we got two days off from work.

      :oD

      How are you doing??

  14. I don't blame you for hating ice storms, or for liking days when school shuts down. We are expecting a cold snap in which the high for the next couple of days will be below zero. I bought groceries this morning and intend to hibernate until at least Tuesday.

  15. Good morning, Blissed Out...

    Where do you live?

    Be safe!!
