"Steely Dan"
I have really been in a funk... so much going on... So much happening... I guess I am having difficulty just processing everything...
I am tired... I am drained... emotionally... physically... in every which way....
When i feel like this, I feel drawn back to music... it's easy for me to get lost in it... I just love it so... I wish I were a better musician... I know just enough about it to get myself in trouble when i can't follow chord changes...
So, I'm down... depressed?? I'm not sure... Dejected?? I don't know why...
Anyhoo... back to music... One of my favorite bands of all time is Steely Dan... even though technically, they aren't a band... it's an ever changing group of musicians that are corralled by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker... Two of their songs always seem to uplift my mood... my spirits...
Did you know that the source of the name of the band was from "The Naked Lunch," by William Bourroughs?? Did you know that it was the name of a metal dildo that belonged to one of the characters in the book??
Anyhoo, one of my favorite all time Steely Dan songs is 'Show Biz Kids'... Their songs are SO complex... so mysterious...
So enjoyable... These do sound MUCH better LOUD!!! So, do turn em UP!!!
My other all-time favorite Steely Dan song is 'Pretzel Logic'... and I found this COOL live recording... it's right down there...
I love the way that Michael McDonald jumps in and sings that part... Did you know that he has been one of the many who have performed in Steely Dan?
I stepped up on the platform...
The man gave me the news...
He said, 'you must be jokin', son...
Where did you get those shoes?'
Anyway... I hope I re-discover my Muse...

Thanks for not Rick-Rolling us.
ReplyDeleteFeel better, yeah?
If you're feeling in a funk, Steely Dan is a great way to groove your way out of it.
ReplyDeleteI suggest you put one your red shoes, hop in the car, blast some Steely Dan and just go for a drive - no destination except away - keep going until you're almost out of gas, then find a gas station, fill up, then head on home.
Must be that "funk" time of year...I am def feeling it too.
ReplyDeleteMusic is what I call my "oasis".. I do play and find the greatest peace just sitting at that piano in my darkest times where I am off to someother place, there is nothing like it. But, listening to good music is a very close second.
Hope the gloom rises soon!
Here. Here. Would like to see that Jane Mansfield retrospective though.
ReplyDeleteSTEELY DAN! oh, my lord, they're my favorite band. i ADORE the dan. donald fagen is my hero. i saw them live in the spring of '07 here in the DC metro area, when they toured with michael mcdonald. they did "peg" with his original vocals back in the mix. so great.
ReplyDeletei switch favorite steely dan songs about every six seconds, but right now i'm high on "the boston rag" and "the royal scam." i always loved "doctor wu," "dirty work" and "throw back the little ones."
as for the gloom: ugh. i'm sending good vibes...
Cheeky captions on the pic.
ReplyDeleteI've been where you are....what you are going through, please don't despair because although it may not seem like it believe me the feeling will go away.
Music is one great healing medicine.
Hang in there Red-- you're stronger than you know.
@ Joshua & Bubba... I will feel better soon. Later in the afternoon yesterday, I came down very ill yesterday... blah... I didn't die so that could be a good thing, I suppose... I hope all is well with you guys... :o)
ReplyDelete@ Flying Solo... yeah, I've read that music does soothe the savage beast... now, I'm in no form or fashion implying that I am savage or a beast... but it does calm me...
@ MonkeyMan... Jane Mansfield did pack some heat, didn't she??
@ Magnolia... I saw them in Memphis at... hmmm... somewhere... some outdoor venue, and they were FABULOUS!!! Spring 2007 would have been about the same time I saw them. They are SUCH perfectionists!!! I LOVE their music. You have great musical taste!!! Did you get that from your Father??
@ Princess... Hey you... good morning. I know that these kinds of things are cyclical. More than anything else, I think I am just tired. As for music being a healing medicine, yes it is!! Thank you for your kind words... always.

I never listened to much Steely Dan, so I've just spent a long while clicking on different videos. Good stuff. I hope things brighten up for you soon.
ReplyDeletei'm a sucker for "countermoon"... it's one of my allll time favorites to play - sing - listen... i don't care - just give it to me!
ReplyDeletei also like, "on the dunes"...
now i'm gong to have to add these two to my repertoire.
Depression opens the door to beauty of some kind.... for you it's music maybe?
I hope you feel better soon...

ReplyDeleteSHOES!!!!!!!!! (wait, let me yell it louder) SHOES!!! you're in funk mode. i am right there with you! Steely Dan sends me back INSTANTLY!!! I was BC (before children). ReplyDeleteallow me to join you in your funk..... love that you're out there...connecting with me in a non superficial way.
