"Ring Ring, Telephone Ring..."

I read something in a magazine the other day... it appears that the art of making telephone calls is falling by the wayside.  It seems it's easier for people to text or IM or email or any other of a host of ways to communicate rather than voice-wise.  It even went on to say that most people who do call, when they reach your voice mail, will NOT leave a message... and that many of those who receive voice mail will not listen to it...
I remember calling this girl once... her name was Jenny... her phone number was 867-5309 or something like that... but she wouldn't answer...

GOD, what a great song to play!!! I love the bass line to this song!  You know, there was another song about 'phoning it in... In my memory, the song was by Mike Nesmith, one of the Monkess that actually had musical talent, but it turns out the song was by a band called Cymarron...

I would SO love to have this phone!! But I doubt it comes in a cell format... I would have that phone on my wall!!  It looks like it could be a combination telephone/gumball dispenser...

It's amazing that since the introduction of cell phones, that pay phones have just about become obsolete...  There is another great GREAT telephone song that has been recorded... by none other than the Great GREAT Wilson Pickett!!! I think that would be SO cool... see if my cell phone provider could give me this phone number... I think it was 634-5789

If you were paying attention to the video, you saw Jimi Hendrix in the photo at the 1:43 mark...  I don't recall Jimi singing about telphones, however...

Another cool 'telephone' song was this one... this is a cover by B.B. King, of Stevie Ray and Jimmy Lee Vaughan's song, 'The Telephone Song'...

The fellow with the pompadour playing next to B.B. King is Jimmy Vaughan... one Hell of a guitarist that doesn't get the credit that he deserves... as much of a guitar slinger as SRV was, he always said he wished he could play like his little brother...

One last telephone song that comes to mind... and it should as far as I'm concerned...

I have a BlackBerry smart phone... and you know what I miss? When I am having a conversation with someone... and it gets heated... I can't slam the fuck out of the phone on the receiver... If you had one of the older style phones, you could slam that handset into the cradle and the person on the other end KNEW they had just had someone hang up on them... Now days, no matter how much rage you used when you hit that disconnect button, the other person could just assume that they had dropped the call...

So... you know what I would love to have??

A 'SLAM' App for my BlackBerry... so that when you get pissed... you can hit that 'SLAM' App key.... and it sends the sound of a phone being slammed down to the person you are talking to... and then it disconnects you from them.

I so want that on my phone...

Have there ever been any songs written about vacuum cleaners... dish washers... washing machines... vibrators...???  I dunno...

I'd best get to work... my yard needs a good mowing...

  1. To be honest with you, I much prefer texting, but that is because I am deeply uncomfortable talking to people on the phone. I either have to be really close to them, in which case I can chat for hours, or they need to be a complete stranger, like when I call the bank. The inbetweeners I always text. But then, I am full of eccentricities.

  2. Hey Shoes, this posting has rather a significant meaning for me.
    A) because Wilson Pickett and BB King formed a huge part of my musical enjoyment as a teenager and
    B) I used to be a telephone operator! Good old British Telecom.....that was my job for 5 years before I had my kids. As a result I love telephone songs :-))

  3. Hey Shoes, I love the idea of a SLAM app. Although I'm one of those people who hates to use a phone. Thanks for your comment today; I appreciate it. Couldn't decide whether I was being too morbid.

  4. I too, miss the ability to slam down a phone. However....even though I primarily use a BBerry too, I *still* have a desk phone in my office at work. And you know what? One day, a nasty coworker went off the deep end, yelling and carrying on...and guess what? I slammed down the receiver. It was bliss. (Especially b/c she's a tyrant and someone finally kicked her off her snotty pedestal.) :-D

  8. @ Helle Kristen... I think I'm the same way... but I know that if I call my son or daughter, they won't answer the phone. However, if I text them, they will almost immediately respond.

All in all, I like eccentrics.. ;o)

@ Leah... thank you for sharing that about yourself... as for B.B. and Wilson Pickett's music, me TOO!!!

@ Blissed Out GrandMa... I would SO love a SLAM App for my phone... :o) As for your post today, no... I SO totally understand the sentimentality of it. I thought it was wonderful. Thank you for becoming #100...

@ Chloe!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!! You SO rock!!! To be able to slam the phone down on a jerk is REALLY empowering!!!! YAY for you knocking her down a link or so!!!

@ That Girl... Have you heard the SRV version of that song? He and his brother did it for the album they did together just before SRV died, 'Family Style'... Thank you for your comments!!!

@ Carol!! How did I forget THAT song?!?!?!?!?!? The lyrics you quoted are my favorite from that song. Jim Croce, along with Harry Chapin, were such GREAT song writers!!!

  9. Slam the fuck out of the phone on the receiver...aaaah, the good old days. Sadly, I remember 867-5309 as though I had been playing it on my record player just yesterday. And even more sadly, I'll be humming it for the next week, I'm sure but will never get around to downloading it onto my MP3 player because I always put everything off.
And yes, I fall into the category of people who does not listen to her voice mails and I don't leave them...makes me wonder why I pay for the plan then, right?

  11. You'd be surprised to know all the places Jimi played back up guitar for, before going out on his own. And I just read on another blog that the tsunami in Hawaii knocked out cell phone comms on Oahu. But land lines stayed up and functional.

  12. 'Telephone line' by ELO is one of my all time favourites. I have played it at least once a week for years... decades!

Also 'Operator' by Manhattan Transfer is cool.

  18. Hahaha, when I read that you wanted to slam the handset when the conversation got heated, I was baffled... I was thinking of a whole other kind of "heated" conversation. The one where you don't want to be restricted by a phone cord, and certainly don't want to hang up ;-)
